“Hamas is responsible, and Hamas will pay,” Netanyahu vows …

With most murders, there is a police investigation.  There then follows the due process of law, establishing guilt or innocence.  But not in Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East.  Netanyahu’s response to the tragic death of the three young settlers around Hebron shows Israeli justice is no different to that which imprisoned the Al Jazeera journalists.

Tonight Netanyahu will unleash the dogs of war on Gaza.  F-16s and whatever else Israel feels in the mood for will blitz Gaza.  The result will be the collective punishment on the entire population of Gaza.

Exactly the same reasoning that demonized the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt is now being used to justify all hell being let loose on Gaza.  Netanyahu is the blood brother of Sisi.  We have heard the rhetoric on endless occasions.  It is the faces that change, and maybe Hebrew is switched for Arabic but the reasoning, the barbarity and violence is the same.

Netanyahu is uncomfortable with a Palestinian National Government of Unity.  His worst fear is Palestinians standing next to Palestinians.

But these should be the least of his worries.  The world is coming around.  People have heard the Zionist song too many times.  The boycott is growing because more and more people are seeing the reasoning behind it as the total opposite to the reasoning coming from Mr Netanyahu.  A huge groundswell of opinion is emerging.  The boycott movement has no talking heads like Mark Regev thank goodness but it is being talked about in Church and Mosque Committees as it is being discussed in Student and Trade Unions.  It is the boycott movement that Netanyahu should fear …

The death of the three young settlers from Hebron …

leave a comment »

News of the bodies being found of the three young people who went missing at a bus stop outside Hebron is a tragedy.  The parents will be devastated. But if these three had have been Palestinians there would have been no coverage.  It would have been just another day for Palestinians.  No one would have thought there to be anything unusual.  The killing of Palestinians is just as tragic as the killing of these Israelis.  Yet you have to ask why there is no coverage when the deaths are those of Palestinians.  Where is the world when Palestinian children are slaughtered?  Do Palestinian children not matter as much as these three young settlers?

Is it only Israeli pain that registers in the Middle East?  Have we become so used to seeing dead Arabs that it does not make news any more?  Tonight the ‘most moral army in the world’ will go crazy in Hebron and Halhoul.  There will be no press coverage.  Why?  Because there will be a complete blockade of the area and a blackout of all news.  Israel will then mobilize Mark Regev and the usual denials and statements about terrorism will follow but tonight there will be a lot more violence and death.

Egypt’s whole regime now at war on journalists …

leave a comment »

For some time commentators have been saying the Middle East uprisings were all about representations.  We heard the message so often, few really understood exactly what it meant.  With the sentences handed out to Al Jazeera’s journalists everything has now become very clear.

How dare Sisi strut around claiming like Mussolini as though he is an elected President and that ‘his’ Judiciary represents anything remotely ‘independent’.  The Egyptian judiciary right now is a bunch of lunatics who are dizzy with their hatred of their own young people who led the uprisings?  This is open war on international journalism.  It is also a war on  information.  What we are seeing now is a regime dizzy with itself. It is very dark for everyone.

Support for these journalists has to expressed everywhere.  This is not an attack on Al Jazeera.  This is infinitely more serious.  Nothing here has anything to do with crime or the Muslim Brotherhood.  This is another set of nutters in power that have to be opposed everywhere  …

This ruling said Sisi and his military junta can do anything it wants in Egypt because the most despotic behavior will not be reported.  Those who do report the situation will be punished in exactly the same way as the Al Jazeera journalists.  Sisi however can do anything he wishes …

Of course Sisi declned getting involved in the Judges decision.  He and the institution that calls its the judiciary are part of the same time, which is incredibly reassuring for Israel …

EGYPTIAN (IN) JUSTICE

leave a comment »

So now we see the real face of the coup.  The message in the imprisonment of the Al Jazeera journalists is clear enough.  There is no justice in Egypt with this regime.  This is a junta.  Worse than the Mubarak years.

Obama has called for a “pardon”.  A pardon for what?  Reporting the news.  These journalists were doing their job.  Journalists are not paid to reproduce Sisi’s rubbish.  This is a very negative development and there will be much more yet to come.

But let’s be clear.  This is the regime that the US still supports.  This is the regime that the US says is in transition.  572 million dollars in military hardware has just gone to Egypt.  The US does not care what sort of injustice is handed out.  What Obama cares about is keeping Israel safe.  As long as Egypt gives its reassurance that it will attack its own people and no one else the aid will continue.

Zionism is a madness …

leave a comment »

A pathology is a pathology no matter how it is expressed.  In some cases it is a temperature and in other cases people put on uniforms and start marching around with guns.   But in the end a pathology is a pathology.

Israel refers to itself as ‘the only democracy in the Middle East’.  It claims photographs like that below show a concern with ‘security’.  No one is really fooled.  As just said, a  pathology is apathology and we all know something is wrong when people hide behind guns and tanks.  After all we saw enough of it through the last century.

An Israeli soldier pushes away a Palestinian man from the village o Farata after masked Jewish settlers from the Havat Gilad nearby settlement threw stones at Palestinian villagers, east of the West Bank city of Qalqilya, on February 28, 2012. AFP PHOTO/JAAFAR ASHTIYEH

Look at this photograph.  We see no communication, we see no interaction and we certainly see no respect.  We see a little man in a uniform pushing the Palestinian around.  We see the gun and radio.  Were we actually there we would no doubt hear strange commands in a confusion of Hebrew and American swear words. Maybe we would hear a little Arabic: yella, yella.  What the photograph shows is Israeli politics. The politics of fear or a straight forward pathology.  This is zionism.  It is about fear and pushing others around because there is no room for any other feeling but fear.   Fear is of the past, fear of the present and quite definitely fear of the future.  And it all gets mixed up so that no one knows who is angry with whom.  Narratives move outside time and space.  Fear distorts all sense of having a grip. The outcome is collective and persistent crime … injustice.

Maybe for zionism it is all about the uniforms.  Covering something up.  Concealment of a purpose no one understands anymore.  Confusion about a past that has never really been dealt with.  Perpetrators of a horrible episode in European history that has never been properly worked through.  The pains of the past have not been acknowledged.  So the pathology just goes on.  It is displaced in all directions as the photograph shows.

This is Israel’s politics.  There is no place for the Palestinians.  Palestinians are objects to be pushed around, here and there because zionism is like a blindness.  It does not see itself because it does not see Others.  But in this photograph no one is misunderstanding what is going on.   Palestinians of course are not confused.  They are hopeless at politics but they are sure about zionism.  For Palestinians land theft is land theft and nutters who put up check-points and walls everywhere to separate one Palestinian from the next do not make arguments.  They just try to push everyone around in a constant cycle of crazy-making.  Zionism is pathology.

Crisis has been coming a long time …

Shahid-Mosque,-Iraq,-2003

The fear for the Middle East has been that the situation in Syria would spread. After all the uprisings spread and so why should we not see the accumulative impact of years of injustice on Palestine and democratic denial come to a head in the same way. People in the Middle East have had enough. Factions have been exploited and US yes men have been placed in control of the region simply because it suited US interests. This has been the name of the game for decades but now it is as though the whole thing is finished.

We have a staggering nine million Syrians who have had to leave their homes. Over two and a half million have had to flee to neighbouring states. In Lebanon right now one in every four people is a Syrian refugee. Iraq is fairing no better. The health system has never picked up from the sanctions leading up to the total destruction of everything in 2003. Do we in Europe think that the people of the region are not seeing the wipe out of their part of the world? The impoverishment of brutal destruction of the region has been relentless. Did we all think there would be no long-term impact?

Hubris is not just in our leaders. It is in us and the way we have stood by and seen the Middle East be destroyed. Eighty-two percent of the infrastructure in Syria is no more – schools, roads, libraries and clinics have all gone. Electricity supplies are non-existent and clean water can no longer be had in many areas. IMF loans have had to be ‘given’ to Jordan for them to cope with the influx of refugees. Turkey is now at its limit. Yet the discourse is still about should the US go in or should they stay out. This is exactly the same discourse that has produced hundreds of years of offense to the people of the region.

The crisis is not in the Palace of Westminster or on Capital Hill. It is in the way we, ordinary people stand by whilst our brothers and sisters are treated like sub-humans. It is us, again ordinary people who need to stand up to the politicians of our great capitals and say ‘no more’. We just like the Palestinians and the Iraqis and the Syrians are having no more of the old games. We want to see international relations based on respect. We want to see Iraqis and Syrians being given proper respect and we know that unless politicians are called to task right now this is not going to come. Change needs to happen within us and our societies before anything happens in the Middle East. And change is going to come …
